An update on recent involvement events

Our Service User and Carer Involvement Coordinator, Linda, recently represented service users and carers at a Community Care and Health Forum event on the Integration of Health and Social Care. This proved to be a very useful day with key speakers from NHS Forth Valley and Falkirk Council giving an update on the current status of Health and Social Care Integration in Falkirk. Although it was encouraging that the question of how to involve service users and carers at local Integration meetings was raised, no plans have been put in place as yet. This is a very complex issue and Linda is keen to ensure that there will be proper support and guidance for people, however they may be involved. We will report more information on what shape service user and carer involvement in Integration plans will take as further discussions occur.

Linda was unable to attend the last meeting of the Falkirk Mental Health Partnership Group, however it was an ideal opportunity for two involvement volunteers to attend on her behalf. This was a particularly difficult task as the group was agreeing its role and remit and how it would function in the future. Some issues remain for service users and carers which Linda will take forward at the next meeting.

A number of people attended the recent Carers Conference in Stirling. The conference examined carers’ legislation and self-advocacy for carers, the latter being something Linda is keen to explore further.

Service users and carers have been encouraged to participate in the 1 in 100 consultation which focused on services and treatment for people with a diagnosis of Schizophrenia or psychosis.

Linda took part in manning a stall within Forth Valley Royal Hospital to promote FDAMH in general and Service User and Carer Involvement. Linda is keen to use opportunities like this to explain what involvement is all about and get more people from the wider community interested in participating in involvement opportunities.

Something to say? Real experience of mental health services must be shared to help drive change and improvements – if you’d like to participate please contact Linda at FDAMH. Participation occurs at many levels, so no need to be shy!
