This is a little gem of a café. Run as a “not for profit” community café, it is friendly, stylish, warm and the food is out of this world! Run by the lovely Ania and supported by trainees and volunteers, it provides fabulous fresh food at great prices. A hearty bowl of home made soup comes in at around £2.20 and the traditional bacon roll rolls in at £1.65!
They also offer a huge and delicious array of panini’s and toasties with prices starting at £3, served with a side plate of salad and crisps. Yum! I can’t even begin to tell you how good their cakes are!! I tried the chocolate cake — WOW! A huge slice and possibly the best I have ever tasted, and I’ve tasted many, many cakes, believe me! As the name of the café suggests, their gingerbread is fabulous – spicy, crisp, melt in the mouth.
The café itself is warm and inviting, popular and busy without being too crowded. It has the usual table and chairs, but they also have a friendly little sofa area, perfect for a cosy chat if you’re popping in for a coffee — made barista style! For those sunnier days (they WILL come, I promise), they have a cheerful seating area outside, so that you can sit and watch the world go by.
The café also runs craft classes and local people have a chance to sell their arts and crafts in the venue. The handmade jewellery for sale is gorgeous and the artwork for sale is very tempting and reasonably priced and adds to the overall look of the venue, which is sited next door to the big Co-op store in Greenpark Drive.
Ania and the café also do outside catering — something FDAMH makes use of at our various events and AGM’s — and, like the food at the café, the quality is superb and the prices excellent for what is provided.
So, if like me, you’re looking for a new “favourite café” to frequent, you couldn’t do better than this wee treasure. Just leave some of the cake for me!!
