Welcome Cafe scheme embraced by communities
You may have read a previous story about FDAMH’s Welcome Café scheme. Inspired by a project in Manchester, we’re working to encourage simple everyday connections in our community with the help of enthusiastic local cafés and restaurants. If you’d like to find out more, including which cafés have joined the scheme, click the Welcome Café icon on our front page!
We’re also keen to develop volunteers to support this community-based project. If you like the sound of dropping in on local cafés in the scheme to keep them up-to-date with materials, ideas and a bit of encouragement then please get in touch!
The Falkirk Welcome Community Café project now has 28 cafés and coffee shops on board and they’re all listed on our Welcome Café pages.
We also have a pilot exercise in Stirling with the following cafés involved: Waitrose, Burgh Coffee shop, Stirling University, Recyke-a-bike Causewayhead. Look out for a launch at Waitrose in the next few weeks! And in Alloa we’re delighted to welcome on board ASDA and Ladybird Café.
Our small team of volunteers are vital to the project, they…
• Visit participating cafes, ensure they have enough literature, i.e. cards, posters etc. to promote the service
• Speak to staff and managers and note how the project is going
• Observe in cafés and see how it effective the service is
• Provide regular feedback of comments/suggestions

Shortlisted for Alliance Self Management Awards
We’re really thrilled that our colleague, Janet Crawford, has been shortlisted in this year’s Alliance Self Management Awards.
Janet is one of three finalists in the Self Management Champion of the Year category. A well-known figure in the local and national spoken-word scene, Janet brings all of her experience and enthusiasm to her inspiring creative groups for people using our Social Spark service.
Janet said “For me it’s about the possibilities which the creative spark can ignite. It’s creating spaces where people feel able to try new things and allow themselves a moment for themselves. Being alongside, listening to and appreciating people for who and where they are, unconditionally… as was done for me, when I needed support.”
Winners will be announced at an awards ceremony at the Scottish Parliament on the 8th October.
